The gold was perhaps the most valuable of all.īut there was more to the gold than that. They likely provided the poor young couple with enough resources to flee to Egypt to escape Herod’s sword (see Matthew 2:13ff). Practically speaking, these gifts were very valuable. Today we’re going to consider the first gift: gold.ĥ. How much gold did the Magi give? (We’re not told in the text.)Ħ. Regardless of how much gold it was, why would this be considered a valuable gift? (Allow for discussion.)ħ. Were Joseph and Mary rich? (No, they lived in a poor area and were not wealthy.)Ĩ. What would a gift like gold mean to the young couple? (Provision, income, etc.) In the next three weeks, we will examine each gift and learn more about who the Magi believed Jesus to be-and how that translates to our lives today. The Magi were communicating about who they believed Jesus to be by giving these specific gifts. The gifts may have been practical, as we’ll discover, but they also had spiritual significance.

Today, we’re going to start a series on the Magi. Why do people give gifts to one another on Christmas? (Because they love each other, love giving, hope someone will get them something in return, etc.).What is the best Christmas present you’ve ever received? (Have each student answer.).What is your favorite thing about Christmas? (Have each student answer.).Invite students to wear their tackiest holiday garb next week-old lady sweaters, silly Christmas socks, Santa hats, jingle bells for earrings, etc. The goal is to have the fewest amount of snowballs on their side when time is up.Īward a prize to the team that wins, maybe a candy cane for each person. Let them know there’s a set amount of time (2-3 minutes) to make snowballs and throw them to the other side. Instruct students to make and throw “snowballs” using the paper provided. Put a stack of notebook paper on each side of the room. Divide your space into two sides by putting some tape on the floor, using a row of chairs, or any type of boundary.
